Rubbish and Recycling Management

Falls Creek Alpine Resort is making a commitment to the sustainable management of recycling and waste at Falls Creek.

Our goal: We are aiming to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2030 in alignment with the target set by the state government.

Strategy: To achieve our goal waste and recycling at Falls Creek will now be separated into organics, glass, mixed recycling and waste.

Impact: Separating organic waste will remove 50% of our waste from landfill. More than 60% of recycling is glass and separating it will aid in the recycling of this material.

Community action: Many of our stakeholders already correctly separating their waste, by winter 2024 everyone will be expected to separate their waste correctly.

Let’s work together to reduce, reuse, and keep valuable resources out of landfill.

Community information session

Where do I put my recycling and rubbish bags?

Recycling and rubbish bags are to be placed in designated hutches

Using the bag’s provided by Falls Creek, please securely double tie/seal the bag and place it inside the designated hutches throughout the village.

Why correctly disposing of rubbish is important

At Falls Creek, we manually collect each bag disposed of in the hutches. Correct disposal ensures our teams safety, prevents any animals getting into the waste, and keeps our village clean.

What happens to the organics?

Living Bin program

Organics have been collected, sorted and turned into compost at the Falls Creek transfer station since 2010.

Contamination of organics bags

Staff hand sort by looking through the transparent bags to check for contamination and decide whether an organics bag can be accepted for recycling. This is way it is crucial that you only put organics into these bags.

How are organics turned into compost?

Organics are collected from the resort and transferred to a local processing facility where it is turned into compost. The compost can be mixed with soil to add nutrients and improve soil condition.

What happens to the mixed recycling, glass, and rubbish?

Recycling, glass and rubbish bags are collected from designated hutches

The bags are then taken to be sorted by hand at our Falls Creek transfer station. Staff hand sort by looking through the transparent bags to check for contamination and decide whether a bag can be accepted for recycling or if it contains too many contaminants then the bag is sent to landfill.

It is crucial that you sort your recycling and rubbish correctly to minimise contamination and divert as much recycling from going to landfill as possible.

What do I do with hard waste?

Hard waste is no longer collected throughout the Village

Please do not dispose of hard waste items in or next to hutches. Items will not be collected and can pose a safety risk the community and environment.

Facility opening times for Falls Creek Stakeholders/Residents is from October - May on the last Sunday of the month from 12:00pm- 4:00pm.

What do I do with electronic waste (e-waste)?

Electronic waste (e-waste) cannot be disposed of into our recycling or rubbish streams

Small e-waste items

Including batteries, phones, chargers, cables and torches can be disposed of in the e-waste slot at the Recycling station located downstairs of the Visitor Information Centre, 1 Slalom Street, Falls Creek.

Larger items

Including printers, televisions, video game consoles, computers and laptops can be taken to the e-waste shed at Howman’s Gap between October and May on the last Sunday of the month from 12:00pm- 4:00pm.

Why can't e-waste be put into the bin?

Many e-waste items contain things that are not safe to be placed in landfill. E-waste items also contain valuable resources that can be recycled if taken to an e-waste collection point.

What do I do with cooking oil/fats?

Oils, fats, and chemicals must be disposed in a sealed correctly labelled container and placed in the hutches for collection.

These materials cannot not be disposed of down sinks or toilets, as they can block the sewer system, cause damage to the waste treatment facility and pose a threat to the environment.

Oils, fats, and chemicals should not be placed in recycling or bin bags.

Additionally, all commercial grease traps must be cleaned out on a regular basis.

Where can I take old snow gear?

Donate

If your old snow gear is still in good working condition, there are several op shops in the Alpine Shire who take donations.

Repurpose

We are still accepting old skis of a certain length to be repurposed into fencing around the Resort. All other skis and snow equipment needs to be taken to the hard waste collection at Howman’s Gap Snow Clearing Area during scheduled times only, which for Falls Creek Stakeholders/Residents is from October- May on the last Sunday of the month from 12:00pm-4:00pm.

Can I have my own compost bin at Falls Creek?

Regulations prohibit the introduction of non-native species into gardens in Alpine Resorts

This is why all the organics collected at Falls Creek are sent off the mountain for recycling.

Non-native species

Fruits/vegetable seeds that might not completely break down in a traditional home compost unit.

Non-native worm farms to help speed up the composting process are not able to be used in the Resort as they are introducing non-native fauna to the alpine environment.

Unique soil in the resort

The PH of compost doesn’t match the acidic soils typical of the alpine environment.

Falls Creek Community Recycling Station

Falls Creek Alpine Resort has a community recycling station located downstairs of the Visitor Information Centre for special items that can be recycled.

You can drop off the following items: Pens and markers, small e-waste items and oral/eye care products

Safety Equipment and Protective Gear

There is also a safety equipment and protective gear collection box for the disposal of: safety goggles, disposable garments/masks, ear plugs and disposable gloves.
